The CGI is outdated in LOTR, but Game of Thones has the benefit of coming out a decade after the LOTR movies and does not utilize GGI as much as LOTR does. In fact, GoT doesn't even show a major battle until the end of Season 2. Also GoT seems to waste a lot of screentime on needless sex scenes. I'm aware that this exists in the books as well.

The Game of Thrones RPG gave hard numbers for the troop strengths of the Great Houses.
