Don't know much about the Mk1 but if it's similar to the Mk2. then Lexia is needed to get the new BSI to communicate with the ECU. There's bound to be someone else along who knows more about the Mk1. BSI .

Pop a piece of rag around it. Crank the engine for a few seconds then go and see if the rag is wet with fuel or not.
